Turn2X
Extremadura
The Turn2X project in Miajadas, Spain is one of Europe’s first commercial renewable natural gas (RNG) plants converting green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂ into synthetic methane (renewable natural gas) using Turn2X’s patented modular methanation technology. The facility, commissioned in March 2024, produces RFNBO-compliant RNG that is injected into the existing gas grid and sold under long-term offtake contracts, marking a key milestone in scalable green gas production. The process uses electrolysis powered by renewable electricity to generate green hydrogen, which is then reacted with CO₂ to form methane that can replace fossil natural gas in industrial and energy applications. In 2025, Turn2X and Axpo Iberia signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply renewable electricity for the electrolyser powering RNG production, further advancing the project’s commercial operations and its role in decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors while utilising existing gas infrastructure. The plant has enabled the first grid injection of green hydrogen-based synthetic methane in Spain, demonstrating operational viability of the technology at commercial scale and laying groundwork for larger future facilities and expanded renewable gas deployment across Europe.
