Helguvik SAF

he IðunnH2 project is a commercial-scale sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) facility planned for the Helguvík industrial area near Keflavík International Airport. The plant is designed around approximately 300 MW of electrolyser capacity to produce green hydrogen using Iceland’s renewable electricity mix (geothermal, hydropower, and wind). Hydrogen will be combined with recycled CO₂ supplied by Carbon Recycling International to produce renewable methanol, which will then be converted into jet fuel using Honeywell’s methanol-to-jet conversion technology. The facility is targeting production of approximately 70,000 tonnes per year of eSAF, which can be blended directly with conventional jet fuel and used in existing aircraft fleets. The project is positioned as Iceland’s largest eSAF development and is targeting commercial operations in the late 2020s, supporting aviation decarbonization through large-scale power-to-liquids fuel production.
