St1
Lappeenranta e-Methanol
St1 is planning a synthetic methanol pilot plant in Lappeenranta, Finland, to produce renewable methanol using green hydrogen generated via electrolysis powered by renewable electricity and captured carbon dioxide sourced from industrial emissions. The facility will serve as a demonstration scale Power-to-Methanol project aimed at validating technology, supply chains, and commercial pathways for larger-scale e-methanol production in Finland. Sweco has been contracted to conduct the pre-design engineering for the project, advancing early technical layouts, integration with local utilities, and preparatory work toward detailed design and permitting. The initiative supports St1’s broader decarbonization strategy by establishing infrastructure and know-how for renewable fuel synthesis in the Nordics. In parallel, Aker Carbon Capture is developing carbon capture solutions linked to the facility to supply the required CO₂ feedstock, enabling integration of capture and conversion processes on-site. Together, these efforts position the Lappeenranta pilot as a key stepping stone toward scalable renewable methanol production for use in transport and industrial applications.
