Nautilus

The NAUTILUS project is an industrial renewable methanol facility under development by Hy2gen Deutschland GmbH, the German subsidiary of Hy2gen AG, in Friesoythe, Lower Saxony. The plant is designed to use renewable hydrogen produced by electrolysis powered with renewable electricity and captured CO₂ from a neighboring biogas plant to produce renewable methanol classified as a renewable fuel of non-biological origin (RFNBO). Production is scheduled to begin in early 2028. The project includes a memorandum of understanding with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) to jointly study supply solutions for using the renewable methanol produced at the facility as a marine fuel, supporting decarbonization of maritime transport by replacing conventional marine fuels with low-carbon alternatives.
