Freija
Nokia eMethane
Freija is advancing a large scale eMethane production hub in Tampere, Finland, developed as a three phase, multi plant project to supply renewable synthetic natural gas for European transport decarbonization starting in 2030. The project will produce eMethane using green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂, with direct injection into the existing natural gas grid to supply heavy duty transport and shipping markets. Each phase represents a standardized plant with 0.85 TWh per year or approximately 58,000 tonnes of eMethane capacity, for a total Tampere build out of roughly 2.55 TWh per year. Freija has submitted the Environmental Impact Assessment for all three phases, secured a long term biogenic CO₂ supply agreement, advanced permitting for the first plant, and is preparing to launch FEED studies. Commercial momentum is supported by signed 10 year offtake term sheets covering three times the capacity of the first plant and a EUR 111 million Finnish government tax credit. The first Tampere plant targets production start in 2030, with a final investment decision planned around 2027, positioning the project as one of Europe’s largest RFNBO compliant eMethane developments.
