PtG Allendorf

The world’s first power to gas demonstration plant combining electrolysis and biological methanation was initially commissioned at the Schwandorf wastewater treatment plant in Germany. The project was developed through a collaboration between MicrobEnergy GmbH, Schmack Carbotech GmbH, Viessmann Werke GmbH & Co. KG, and Schmack Biogas GmbH. In late 2014, the facility was relocated to Allendorf (Eder), Germany, where it continued operation. The plant integrates a PEM electrolyzer supplied by Carbotech with a biological methanation unit based on MicrobEnergy’s BiON technology, demonstrating the technical viability of converting renewable hydrogen and CO₂ into synthetic methane.
