VolagHy Kuopio eSAF
VolagHy is developing its flagship sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) production facility in the Sorsasalo industrial area of Kuopio, designed to support large scale deployment of synthetic aviation fuels across Europe. Backed and initiated by InnoEnergy, the project integrates green hydrogen production, biogenic CO₂ capture, and advanced fuel synthesis to produce low carbon eSAF. VolagHy is working with Mondi Kuopio to source biogenic CO₂ from pulp and paper operations, while Savon Voima is delivering the grid connection and Kuopion Energia will recover excess electrolysis heat to supply district heating to up to 10,000 households. The Kuopio project has secured a land reservation agreement and received a €150 million tax credit from Business Finland, supporting development and construction. VolagHy plans to use this first facility as a blueprint to replicate up to five eSAF plants across the Nordics by 2040, positioning Kuopio as a cornerstone site for scaling sustainable aviation fuel production and aviation decarbonization in Europe.
