Abadi LNG Carbon Capture Project
The Abadi LNG project in Indonesia incorporates a large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) system as part of its revised development plan approved in December 2023. The CCS facilities are designed to capture CO₂ produced during gas processing at the onshore LNG plant in Maluku and transport it back offshore for injection into deep geological formations within the Masela Block. This marks the first LNG project in Indonesia where CCS costs are recoverable under the production sharing contract framework, setting a precedent for integrating decarbonization into major energy infrastructure. The CCS system is expected to significantly reduce the project’s carbon footprint, helping align Abadi LNG with Indonesia’s net-zero goals while ensuring the long-term commercial viability of its 9.5 mtpa LNG export capacity and domestic gas supply.
