Alco Bio Fuel Gent Carbon Capture Project

Alco Bio Fuel (with partners Messer Benelux and Ijsfabriek Strombeek) has installed a second CO₂ recovery line at its Ghent ethanol biorefinery, taking total capture to ~160,000 tCO₂/yr. The food-/bio-grade CO₂—captured from fermentation, purified and liquefied—is sold into beverage, dry ice, greenhouse horticulture, water treatment, and chemical markets. The second unit (commissioned spring 2022) followed a €10 million investment and lifted site capacity by ~60%, with combined partner investments across both units totaling ~€25 million.
