Battle River CCS

The Battle River Carbon Hub (BRCH), led by Heartland Generation in east-central Alberta, is an integrated project to convert the former coal-fired Battle River Generating Station into the world’s first 100% hydrogen-fueled baseload power plant. Using Autothermal Reforming (ATR), the project will produce clean hydrogen on site and retrofit existing boilers to generate zero-carbon electricity, supported by an open-access CCS hub designed to sequester up to 5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually. Early funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta, Alberta Innovates, and potential federal support underscores alignment with net-zero goals, while a carbon sequestration permit and subsurface work by Carbon Alpha have confirmed the viability of local reservoirs.
