BECCS Stockholm
The Beccs Stockholm project is a large-scale Bio-Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) facility being developed by Stockholm Exergi at its existing biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Stockholm. The project will capture biogenic CO₂ from biomass combustion, compress and liquefy it, and transport it for permanent geological storage offshore in the North Sea, creating negative emissions by removing carbon that would otherwise enter the atmosphere. The facility is expected to begin operations in 2028 and capture up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, making it one of the largest bioenergy CCS installations in Europe. Over its first decade of operation the project could remove millions of tonnes of biogenic CO₂ from the carbon cycle, contributing to Swedish and EU climate neutrality goals and helping establish a new market for certified net carbon removals. The development combines proven capture technology with existing CHP infrastructure and is supported by funding from the Swedish government, the EU Innovation Fund, and other institutional partners.
