Burns Harbor Carbon Capture
Cleveland‑Cliffs has submitted a funding application (on December 5, 2022) to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations for the next phase, front‑end engineering design (FEED) of a large‑scale carbon capture project at its Burns Harbor iron‑and‑steel plant in Northwest Indiana. The proposed FEED phase, expected to take 24 months, targets capture of up to 2.8 million tons of CO₂ annually from blast‑furnace gas at ≥95% net carbon capture efficiency, with project costs equally shared by Cleveland‑Cliffs and the DOE through Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding
