Carbon Iceland Project

The Carbon Iceland project will capture over 1 million tonnes of CO₂ annually from Iceland’s smelters, starting with Norðurál in Grundartangi, and convert it with hydrogen into renewable fuels for the fishing, maritime, and transport sectors. It has signed an agreement with Ölgerðin, Iceland’s largest beverage producer, to supply green liquid CO₂ from 2028, and partnered with Johnson Matthey to scale sustainable methanol production, positioning the project as a key driver of Iceland’s low-carbon transition.
