Convertus York Biofuel Facility

The Convertus York Biofuel Facility is a wet anaerobic digestion plant under construction on a 12-acre site adjacent to York Region’s Materials Recovery and Transfer Facility in the Town of East Gwillimbury, Ontario, being developed and operated by Canadian waste-to-energy developer Convertus Group. The facility will process up to 200,000 tonnes per year of source-separated organic waste (green bin material) from York Region into three product streams: 350,000 to 400,000 gigajoules per year of renewable natural gas, food-grade and beverage-grade biogenic CO₂ captured and liquefied on-site, and low-carbon liquid fertilizer for agricultural use. Three digesters and a digestate tank are being installed with room for further expansion. Convertus estimates the facility will displace approximately 12,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year versus previous composting-based processing plus a further 15,000 tonnes per year in avoided waste-transport emissions, and will save York Region approximately CA$85 million over a 20-year contract term running through 2047.
