Deeside Clean Energy Plant

The Deeside Clean Energy Plant is a food-waste anaerobic digestion facility with integrated biogenic CO₂ capture being developed by The Circular Economy Development Ltd (TCED) in a joint venture with abrdn Global Sustainable Infrastructure Partners IV LP (aGSIP) at Deeside industrial park on the England-Wales border, approximately 40 km south of Liverpool. The facility will process 120,000–124,000 tonnes of food waste per year through anaerobic digestion, producing approximately 180 GWh of biomethane annually for injection into the local gas grid (with a portion used to generate ~5 MW of green electricity via a combined heat and power unit), plus approximately 16,000 tonnes per year of biogenic CO₂ captured during biogas upgrading, liquefied on-site, and sold to merchant markets for food, beverage, and industrial applications. The plant reached financial close in September 2024 at a total project cost of approximately £60 million (€71 million), with a construction loan facility from Deutsche Bank and additional debt from the Rubicon Infrastructure and Energy Transition Debt Fund alongside abrdn equity. Construction began in Q3 2024 and commercial operations are targeted for late 2026.
