DREAM Project

Heidelberg Materials’ Rezzato-Mazzano CCS project (also known as the DREAM project) is a feasibility study and early-stage carbon capture initiative at its Rezzato-Mazzano cement plant in Brescia, Italy, aimed at capturing CO₂ emissions directly from cement production and transporting them for permanent underground storage. The project seeks to evaluate a source-to-sink CCS solution that could make the plant the first in Italy to produce carbon-captured net-zero cement under the evoZero® brand by capturing more than 95 percent of the plant’s CO₂ emissions from clinker production and other process streams . The study includes assessments of capture technology integration for both gray and white clinker production lines, pipeline transport options, and connections to the Ravenna CCS storage hub under the Adriatic Sea being developed by a joint venture of Eni and Snam. Captured CO₂ would be piped to depleted gas fields offshore Ravenna for permanent geological sequestration, leveraging storage capacity estimated at over 500 million tonnes and planned regional CO₂ infrastructure . In November 2025 the European Union Innovation Fund selected the DREAM project for grant agreement preparation, recognizing its potential to capture around 1 million tonnes of CO₂ annually and support large-scale decarbonization of cement production in Europe. Early technical discussions have begun with partners including Eni and Snam to validate capture feasibility, pipeline routing, and integration with future storage capacity, with the overall initiative positioned as a model for industrial CCS in the Mediterranean region .
