Förka biogas carbon capture project

Förka, Bakkafrost's biogas plant at Hoyvík near Tórshavn on Streymoy, is the carbon dioxide source for the DecarbFaroe project, the Faroe Islands' first CO2 storage pilot. Biogenic CO2 from the plant's operations will be dissolved in water and injected into the surrounding old basalt, where it reacts to form stable carbonate minerals and is stored permanently. This adds permanent carbon removal to Förka's role in the circular economy, helping demonstrate that in-situ mineralisation in basalt can be a safe, low-cost, and scalable route to onshore CO2 storage.
