Gary Works Carbon Utilization Project

U. S. Steel and CarbonFree will install the SkyCycle™ system at the Gary Works blast furnaces to capture and mineralize up to 50,000 tCO₂ per year into carbon-neutral calcium carbonate, starting in 2026. Using furnace slag in the process, the project supports U. S. Steel’s 2030 emissions-reduction and 2050 net-zero goals, while enabling lower-carbon steel products like verdeX™ and supplying sustainable materials for paper, plastics, and building products.
