Gevo
Gevo North Dakota Carbon Capture Project
Gevo completed its acquisition of the Red Trail Energy ethanol production facility and associated carbon capture and sequestration assets in Richardton, North Dakota in early 2025 for approximately $210 million. The site, now branded as Net Zero North, is a core component of Gevo’s low carbon fuels strategy and produces roughly 65 million gallons per year of ethanol along with distillers grains and vegetable oil coproducts that serve domestic and export markets. The facility integrates carbon capture directly into the ethanol fermentation process, capturing high purity biogenic CO₂ streams and permanently storing them onsite. Captured CO₂ is compressed and injected into deep saline storage formations beneath the site using a dedicated Class VI permitted injection well targeting the Broom Creek formation. This onsite storage configuration eliminates the need for long distance CO₂ transport infrastructure and enables continuous capture operations directly at the production source. Carbon capture operations at the Richardton site began in mid 2022, making it the first commercial ethanol facility in the United States to implement full scale onsite carbon capture and geologic sequestration. The current system captures approximately 160,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ per year, with technical studies indicating expansion potential approaching 1 million metric tonnes per year based on available pore space and reservoir performance. The project was developed with technical support from the University of North Dakota Energy and Environmental Research Center and funding assistance from the U.S. Department of Energy.
