Gorgon

The Gorgon CCS project captures CO₂ separated from natural gas produced from the Greater Gorgon gas fields and injects it into the Dupuy Formation beneath Barrow Island for permanent geological storage. The project is operated by Chevron under the Gorgon Joint Venture, with partners ExxonMobil, Shell, Osaka Gas, JERA, Tokyo Gas, and Chubu Electric Power. Construction of the CCS facilities was completed alongside the LNG development, with CO₂ injection starting in August 2019. The system was designed to inject 3.3 to 4.0 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, with a total expected storage capacity of approximately 120 million tonnes over the life of the project. As of the mid-2020s, the project has injected over 11 million tonnes of CO₂. The CCS operation is integrated with the Gorgon LNG plant and is a condition of environmental approval for gas production on Barrow Island.
