Grundartangi Carbon Capture

Aker Carbon Capture and Carbfix are collaborating to explore carbon capture and storage (CCS) opportunities at Elkem Iceland’s Grundartangi plant, an industrial facility producing silicon and ferroalloys near Reykjavík, Iceland. The initiative aims to assess the feasibility of capturing CO₂ emissions from Elkem’s operations and permanently storing them underground using Carbfix’s rapid mineralization carbon storage technology, which dissolves CO₂ in water and injects it into basaltic rock where it reacts to form stable carbonate minerals. Under the partnership, Aker Carbon Capture will evaluate capture system design, integration with the plant’s flue gas sources, and techno-economic performance, while Carbfix will lead carbon storage site characterization and mineralization route development. The collaboration seeks to develop a scalable model for industrial CCS in Iceland’s basalt geology, leveraging local expertise to reduce the carbon footprint of heavy industry and contribute to national decarbonization objectives.
