Holcim Höver Carbon Capture Project

The Höver carbon capture project is being developed by Holcim Deutschland at its Höver cement plant in Germany to build a pilot CO₂ capture unit that separates carbon dioxide from kiln flue gas. The pilot uses Cool Planet Technologies’ membrane-based capture technology under license from HEREON, designed to demonstrate cost-effective CO₂ separation and energy efficiency improvements compared with conventional solvent systems. In May 2024, Holcim completed Phase 1 of the Höver decarbonisation project, which included testing of Cool Planet’s membrane modules for CO₂ rejection and integration potential on cement kiln exhaust streams. The membranes achieved high selectivity in pilot testing, providing a technology foundation for scaling capture units.
