Humber Zero Phillips 66

The Humber Zero carbon capture project is a collaborative initiative between Phillips 66 Limited and VPI to install one of the UK’s largest industrial carbon capture systems at the Humber Refinery and a nearby combined heat and power (CHP) plant in North Lincolnshire, England. Once operational, the capture facilities are designed to capture up to 3.8 million of tonnes of CO₂ per year from refinery flue gas and CHP emissions. Phillips 66 leads the project development and integration at the Humber Refinery, while VPI-Immingham (a subsidiary of Vitol) co-develops and hosts capture infrastructure on its CHP plant. Worley has been engaged for front-end engineering to integrate CO₂ capture technology and design export infrastructure for captured CO₂. Shell’s Cansolv® CO₂ capture process has been selected for separating CO₂ from refinery flue gas in engineering plans. Captured CO₂ is planned to be compressed and transported for permanent geological storage via proposed UK CCS networks, most likely linking into the Viking CCS depleted gas fields under the southern North Sea. Humber Zero is progressing through planning and engineering stages with the goal of starting operations in the late 2020s.
