INPEX
Ichthys CCS Project
INPEX is developing the Ichthys Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project to support decarbonization of the Ichthys LNG facility at Bladin Point, near Darwin. The project includes installation of a CO₂ compression and export system, enabling transport of captured CO₂ for offshore sequestration primarily via the Bonaparte CCS Project, with optional routing to the Bayu-Undan CCS Project. The development centers on new pipeline infrastructure across the Middle Arm Peninsula, including a CO₂ pipeline from the Ichthys LNG facility to an onshore inlet (tie-in) station, and a bidirectional pipeline connection to the Darwin LNG facility at Wickham Point. This configuration enables flexible routing of CO₂ between facilities and export pathways. Two pipeline tie-in stations will be constructed, along with associated power and communications systems and a supplementary power intake substation to support future integration of external (e.g., green) power sources. Construction will involve trenching and horizontal directional drilling, with a total disturbance footprint of ~77 hectares (largely within previously developed corridors). Supporting infrastructure includes temporary laydown areas, batching plants, and soil management systems. The project also includes upgrades to acid gas removal units (AGRUs) and integration of a CO₂ compression and export system within the Ichthys LNG facility. Pre-commissioning and commissioning activities will cover pipeline systems, inlet stations, and associated power infrastructure, followed by full operations and maintenance over an expected ~30-year life. The project schedule targets construction beginning in 2028, with commissioning and start-up around 2030.
