Igelsta BECCS
The Igelsta BECCS Project is a bioenergy carbon capture and storage initiative at Söderenergi’s Igelsta combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Södertälje, Sweden, designed to capture CO₂ from biomass-fueled flue gas and permanently store it underground. The system will remove CO₂ emissions produced during combustion of biogenic fuels and condition the captured CO₂ for transport to geological storage, enabling negative emissions by permanently removing biogenic carbon that would otherwise be released to the atmosphere. The project is supported by a SEK 75 million (approx. USD 7 million) grant from Sweden’s Energy Agency to fund feasibility, engineering, and early development work. Söderenergi engaged Aker Carbon Capture to conduct detailed feasibility and front-end engineering design (FEED) studies for the capture facility, assessing technology selection, integration with the existing CHP plant, and interfaces for CO₂ conditioning and export.
