Varme Energy / Gibson Energy
Industrial Heartland Waste-to-Energy Facility
Varme Energy as Canada’s first commercial-scale waste-to-energy facility with integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS). The facility, located in Strathcona County in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland northeast of Edmonton, will process around 205,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per year and convert it into firm power while capturing more than 130,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually for permanent underground storage in deep saline aquifers under Alberta’s regulatory framework. Varme Energy leads project execution and financing, supported by engineering work completed by Babcock & Wilcox, which is conducting front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the waste-to-energy plant, emissions control systems, and the post-combustion carbon capture system. Carbon Direct has partnered with Varme to provide technical expertise and to help bring biogenic carbon removal credits to market, aiming to deliver roughly 130,000 tonnes of high-quality BECCS credits annually. The project leverages existing CO₂ transport and sequestration infrastructure in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, including nearby pipeline and storage hubs, and is targeting commercial operations around 2029.
