Jubail Industrial Complex CCS

SABIC operates one of the earliest and largest industrial carbon capture and utilization (CCU) facilities in Saudi Arabia at Jubail Industrial City, where its United petrochemical affiliate’s CO₂ purification and liquefaction plant captures and purifies up to about 500,000 metric tons of CO₂ per year from ethylene glycol production. The purified CO₂ is pipelined to adjacent SABIC affiliates for use in enhanced methanol, urea, and other chemical products, and some liquid CO₂ is produced for food-grade uses, reducing emissions from chemical manufacturing processes while supporting value-added production. Building on this CCU base, SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company is advancing feasibility and technical studies for a proposed low-carbon ammonia and urea complex in Jubail that would produce around 1.2 million metric tons per year of low-carbon ammonia and about 1.1 million metric tons per year of urea and specialized agri-nutrients. This planned facility is designed to integrate CO₂ capture from upstream hydrogen and synthesis units with ammonia production to lower the carbon intensity of fertilizer and ammonia products, with feedstock allocations approved by the Saudi Ministry of Energy and work underway toward final investment decision.
