Ørsted
Kalundborg Hub Avedore
Ørsted is constructing one of Denmark’s first commercial-scale carbon capture facilities at the Avedøre Power Station, a large energy plant near Copenhagen that co-fires biomass and fossil fuels to produce heat and power. The project will install multiple SLB Capturi Just Catch™ modular capture systems to capture CO₂ directly from flue gas streams before they are released to the atmosphere. Captured CO₂ will be compressed, liquefied, and prepared for export to offshore geological storage sites in the Danish North Sea under Denmark’s emerging CCS infrastructure framework. In May 2023 Ørsted announced the project and signed contracts with SLB Capturi and Aker Carbon Capture for delivery of five Just Catch capture units. Construction began in late 2023 and in early 2025 key capture plant components were installed, marking an important milestone toward commissioning. Ørsted also entered into a major agreement to develop regional CO₂ logistics and storage networks to support long-term transportation and sequestration of captured CO₂. The facility is planned to be operational by the mid-2020s, positioning it as a foundational CCS deployment in Denmark. The project aligns with broader Danish CO₂ infrastructure development, including exploration permits for offshore storage sites granted to partners like Equinor and others, establishing a complete capture, transport, and storage value chain. Once operational, Ørsted’s carbon capture plant will significantly reduce emissions from the Avedøre site and demonstrate scalable CCS integration in a hard-to-abate power and industrial sector.
