Lorain County Landfill CCS

Republic Services, through its subsidiary Lorain Carbon Zero Solutions, LLC, is developing a carbon capture and geologic storage project at the Lorain County Landfill in Oberlin, Ohio. The project is designed to capture CO₂ generated from landfill gas operations and inject it into deep subsurface formations using a dedicated Class VI injection well (CCS #1) located on the landfill property. The CCS system includes a horizontal injection well with an approximately 1,200-meter lateral, supported by multiple monitoring wells to track plume migration and pressure response within the storage reservoir. The project is engineered to inject up to 387 metric tons of CO₂ per day, with continuous monitoring of injection pressure, temperature, flow rate, and annular integrity to ensure safe long-term storage. CO₂ will be injected into the Mt. Simon Formation.
