Mammoth

Climeworks – Plant Mammoth is a large-scale direct air capture (DAC) and storage facility developed by Climeworks in partnership with Carbfix, located near Reykjavík, Iceland. Building on the earlier Plant ORCA, Mammoth uses modular DAC units to pull CO₂ directly from ambient air and then injects the captured CO₂ into underground basalt formations where it rapidly mineralizes into stable rock thanks to Iceland’s unique geology and abundant clean geothermal energy. Plant Mammoth is designed for significantly higher capacity than ORCA, with the ability to capture up to ~36,000 metric tons of CO₂ per year, making it one of the largest operational DAC facilities in the world. The facility began operations in 2023 and serves as a key commercial deployment demonstrating the scalability of DAC technology with permanent geological storage.
