Mikawa Plant Carbon Capture Project

In 2020, Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS) launched a large CO2 Capture Demonstration Plant adjacent to its 50 MW Mikawa Power Plant in Omuta, Japan, as part of the Ministry of the Environment’s “Sustainable CCS Project.” The facility, integrated with the biomass-fueled plant (using palm kernel shells), captures over 600 tons of CO₂ per day using Toshiba’s proprietary TS-1 amine solvent and steam extracted from the turbine for regeneration. This project marks a key step toward establishing a full BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage) system, with future plans to transport and permanently store the captured CO₂ under the seabed offshore Japan. It also demonstrated an innovative amine emission mitigation technology, tested and evaluated on-site, building on Toshiba’s experience with smaller pilot capture facilities since 2009.
