MLC Fortera Ste. Genevieve CO2-to-Cement
Fortera and Mississippi Lime Company (MLC) are developing the first commercial-scale CO₂-to-cement plant at MLC’s Ste. Genevieve, Missouri lime production facility, sized at 300,000 tons per year of Fortera’s proprietary ReAct® cement, which is nearly 50% captured CO₂ by weight. The plant will capture CO₂ emitted from MLC’s limestone calcination process at the Ste. Genevieve site (which is MLC’s largest lime operation in the Americas) using Fortera’s patented ReCarb process technology, and transform it into a reactive cement product that integrates seamlessly with MLC’s existing kiln infrastructure and limestone supply chain. The project tackles two hard-to-abate industries simultaneously: cement (which accounts for roughly 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions per the U.S. Department of Energy) and lime (where calcination of limestone generates roughly 60% of the sector’s scope-1 emissions). Fortera has demonstrated that its technology can produce cement at cost parity with portland cement while cutting CO₂ emissions by 70%.
