MM Kotkamills Carbon Capture Project

Arctic Sisu is developing a large-scale e-methane (power-to-X) facility in Kotka, Finland, located next to the Kotkamills pulp and paper mill, where it will capture and reuse roughly 50% of the mill’s biogenic CO₂ emissions as feedstock for synthetic methane production. The project will be built in three phases totaling about €900 million, ultimately targeting 900–950 GWh per year of renewable e-methane for maritime transport, gas grids, and liquefaction markets. Integrated industrial side-streams and waste heat from the mill are intended to significantly reduce the project’s overall carbon footprint. FID is planned for 2026, with first-phase commercial production expected in 2028, and the developer reports that an initial offtake client has already been agreed.
