MCi Carbon
Myrtle
Myrtle is a mineral carbonation demonstration facility built and operated by MCi Carbon on Kooragang Island in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. The plant is co-located with and physically connected to Orica's Kooragang Island ammonia manufacturing facility, which serves as both the CO₂ source and as MCi Carbon's founding investor. Myrtle uses MCi Carbon's proprietary mineral carbonation process to react captured industrial CO₂ producing magnesium and calcium carbonates plus amorphous silica that are sold as inputs for concrete, plasterboard, paint, paper, glass, and adhesives. The facility is sized to capture approximately 2,500 tonnes of CO₂ per year from Orica's ammonia plant and produce up to 10,000 tonnes of saleable mineral product per year. Myrtle is designed as a customer validation platform where third-party emitters can run their own CO₂ and mineral feedstocks through the plant, with planned international scale-up targeting more than 200,000 tonnes of mineral product absorbing approximately 50,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.
