Nesselnbach BECCS

CO2 Energie AG, a joint venture founded by Regionalwerke AG Baden and Recycling Energie AG, has begun operating its first CO₂ liquefaction facility at a biogas upgrading site in Nesselnbach, in the Swiss canton of Aargau. This unique European project captures CO₂ that would otherwise be emitted during the processing of biogas, liquefies it, and supplies the high-purity liquid CO₂ to industrial customer, notably Messer Schweiz AG. The plant represents pioneering work in Switzerland’s carbon management landscape because it turns a waste gas stream from biomethane production into a marketable industrial gas, with around 90 % of the CO₂ separated now finding productive use instead of escaping to the atmosphere. The venture also secured support from the Stiftung Klimaschutz und CO₂-Kompensation (KliK), which guarantees offtake of climate compensation certificates, underpinning the project’s economic viability and boosting its role in advancing CO₂ valorization and avoidance in the region.
