One Earth Energy Carbon Capture Project
One Earth Sequestration is developing a carbon capture and storage project at the One Earth Energy ethanol facility in Gibson City, Illinois to capture high-purity biogenic CO₂ from the fermentation process and permanently store it underground. The project is designed to capture more than 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, compress the CO₂ onsite, and transport it through a dedicated pipeline approximately 5.92 miles in length. The pipeline begins at the existing CO₂ compression facility in western Ford County, crosses into McLean County, and terminates at the proposed injection well sites, with all right-of-way agreements secured voluntarily and no use of eminent domain. Captured CO₂ will be injected more than 6,000 feet underground into deep saline formations within the Illinois Basin under EPA Class VI permitting requirements, providing permanent geological storage. By integrating carbon capture directly into ethanol production, the project significantly lowers the carbon intensity of biofuels, supports low-carbon fuel markets, and establishes scalable infrastructure that can enable future expansion and additional regional CO₂ capture sources.
