The Örnsköldsvik CCU project is a carbon capture and utilization initiative in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, developed by Liquid Wind in collaboration with Övik Energi to capture biogenic CO₂ from Övik Energi’s biomass-fueled combined heat and power (CHP) plant and use it as a feedstock for low-carbon eMethanol production. The facility captures approximately 150,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year from industrial flue gas and combines it with green hydrogen produced via renewable-powered electrolysis to synthesize around 100,000 tonnes of eMethanol annually, supporting decarbonization in hard-to-abate transport sectors such as shipping and aviation. Liquid Wind leads project development and will build and operate the eMethanol facility, while Övik Energi supplies the biogenic CO₂ source from its CHP operations and integrates steam and energy flows for efficiency. The project has received funding support including a €3.6 million grant from Sweden’s Industriklivet program administered by the Swedish Energy Agency to advance pre-engineering work and move toward a future investment decision for full-scale construction.
