Pembina
Pembina Low Carbon Complex
The Pembina–Marubeni hydrogen and ammonia complex near Redwater, Alberta includes plans for integrated hydrogen production with carbon capture and storage. The facility will process natural gas to produce low-carbon hydrogen that feeds ammonia synthesis, with an on-site carbon capture system to separate CO₂ from hydrogen production and related process streams. The captured CO₂ will be compressed and transported for permanent geological storage, helping reduce the carbon intensity of hydrogen and ammonia output. Tecnicas Reunidas completed the front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the project’s carbon capture and hydrogen sections, defining the technical basis for capture, compression, dehydration, and integration with downstream synthesis units ahead of final investment decision and execution. The Alberta government lists the complex in its major projects inventory, noting capture technology is key to achieving Alberta’s climate and hydrogen strategies by lowering CO₂ emissions from industrial hydrogen production and supporting the province’s CCS infrastructure build-out.
