Petrokemija Kutina

The Petrokemija Kutina carbon capture and storage initiative was an early full-chain CCS pilot project planned at Petrokemija’s ammonia production facility in Kutina, Croatia, under Croatia’s national CCS strategy. The concept was to capture approximately 190,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year from the ammonia plant’s emissions and transport it via repurposed pipeline infrastructure to nearby depleted oil and gas fields near Ivanić Grad for permanent geologic storage in mature reservoirs, marking one of the first CCS deployments proposed in the country. The project advanced into early development and planning stages, forming part of Croatia’s Carbon Capture and Storage ambitions and included in European CCS mapping efforts. However, it was cancelled following shifts at the Petrokemija Kutina site, where the company pivoted back to explosive and fertilizer production instead of pursuing the CCS pathway due the Ukraine conflict, effectively halting CCS development at that facility.
