Plant Daniel CCS
The Plant Barry carbon capture FEED study was led by Southern Company Services with Linde and BASF under a US Department of Energy award to evaluate adding post-combustion CO₂ capture to a large natural gas combined cycle power plant. Plant Barry in Alabama was initially screened alongside Plant Daniel due to similar turbine configurations, available space, and proximity to potential CO₂ storage sites, before Plant Daniel was selected as the final host site for detailed engineering. The FEED scope covered flue gas pre-treatment, absorber and regenerator systems, solvent circulation, CO₂ compression, and integration with existing plant utilities, using BASF’s amine-based solvent technology and Linde’s capture and compression design. The design basis targeted 90 percent CO₂ capture from full-load turbine exhaust streams at commercial scale power output. The study produced full engineering layouts, equipment sizing, and construction planning, with a total installed capital cost estimate of approximately $752 million (2021 USD) and a projected execution timeline of just under five years.
