Priolo biorefinery

Eni and Q8 Italy have formally approved a major strategic investment to construct a new 500,000-tonne-per-year biorefinery at the Versalis industrial complex in Priolo, Sicily, marking one of the most significant advanced biofuel projects in Southern Europe. The joint venture, building on a long-standing partnership between the two companies, will repurpose the existing site and leverage Eni’s proprietary Ecofining™ technology to convert waste materials, residues, and vegetable oils into Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF-Biojet) for road, marine, and aviation transport markets. Engineering work has been completed, preparatory contracting activities are underway, and demolition and permitting processes have begun, with full commercial operations targeted by end of 2028. The project supports Italy’s energy transition and EU climate goals while deepening the strategic relationship between Eni and Q8 and aligning with Eni’s broader plan to expand its biorefining capacity to 5 million tonnes per year by 2030.
