Calpine
Project Enterprise
Calpine’s Project Enterprise is a carbon capture demonstration pilot installed at the Los Medanos Energy Center in Pittsburg, California, a ~678 MW natural gas combined-cycle power plant. The pilot was launched in mid-2023 under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy and uses ION Clean Energy’s advanced solvent-based capture technology to remove CO₂ from a slipstream of flue gas. Over its ~18-month test program, the system is capturing roughly 10 tonnes of CO₂ per day to evaluate performance, emissions reduction, operational requirements, and scalability for larger commercial deployment. The purpose of the Los Medanos pilot is to validate the capture technology in an operational combined-cycle power plant environment and generate data to support future full-scale CCS projects — including Calpine’s planned Sutter Decarbonization Project, which aims to capture and store up to 1.75 million metric tons of CO₂ annually when fully built out.
