Project FLITE
Project FLITE (Fuel via Low carbon Integrated Technology from Ethanol) is a commercial-scale Alcohol-to-Jet Sustainable Aviation Fuel facility being developed at North Sea Port in Ghent, Belgium by a consortium of SkyNRG (project lead), LanzaTech (technology provider), Fraunhofer, E4tech, and RSB, using LanzaJet's proprietary Alcohol-to-Jet process to convert low-carbon ethanol into synthetic paraffinic kerosene. On May 11, 2026, LanzaTech announced site selection at North Sea Port, Ghent — directly across the canal from the ArcelorMittal Steelanol ethanol plant, the strongly implied primary feedstock source. The facility is sized to produce approximately 79,000 tonnes of SAF and 9,000 tonnes of renewable diesel per year, with a total project cost of approximately €500 million and a targeted three-year construction period. The SAF will be certified to CORSIA, EU ReFuelEU Aviation, and UK SAF Mandate compliance standards. Project FLITE originated as an EU Horizon 2020 grant (Grant ID 857839, project kickoff December 8, 2020) with an initial €20 million EU contribution and an original scope of 30,000 tonnes/year SAF at pre-commercial demonstration scale (TRL 7). The current 79,000 tpa Ghent commercial project represents a 2.6× scale-up from the original demonstration scope, with the same consortium, technology, and funding backbone continuing forward. As of the May 2026 site selection announcement, Front-End Engineering Design was described as largely complete, site control secured, feedstock letters of intent and offtake frameworks in place, and Environmental Impact Assessment scoping notification imminent with Belgian authorities — collectively marking a major de-risking milestone on the path to Final Investment Decision. Operations are targeted within five years of the site selection announcement, implying startup around 2030–2031. The FEED contractor, offtake counterparties, and FID date have not yet been publicly disclosed.
