Octavia Carbon
Project Hummingbird
Project Hummingbird is a pilot direct air capture (DAC) and storage project being developed by Octavia Carbon in Naivasha, Kenya, along the Great Rift Valley, and is considered the first DAC facility in the Global South and on the African continent. The project captures carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere using modular DAC machines and permanently stores the CO₂ underground through basalt mineralization, in partnership with storage company Cella Mineral Storage. The pilot facility initially targets removal of around 250 tCO₂ per year, with plans to scale to approximately 1,000 tCO₂ per year as additional DAC units are deployed. The captured CO₂ will be injected into volcanic basalt formations where it reacts chemically to form stable carbonate minerals, providing long-term geological storage. The project leverages Kenya’s abundant geothermal energy to supply most of the heat and power required for DAC operations
