Ras Laffan LNG CCS

QatarEnergy, with participation from international partners including ExxonMobil, operates a large-scale carbon capture and storage system at its Ras Laffan LNG facilities in Qatar to reduce CO₂ emissions from liquefied natural gas production. The project is designed to capture and sequester up to about 4.1 million tonnes of CO₂ per year from existing LNG train operations and associated gas processing before it is released to the atmosphere. This initiative forms part of Qatar’s broader CCS strategy, which includes earlier capacity of approximately 2.2 million tonnes per year and future expansions tied to LNG growth, supporting a long-term goal of capturing more than 11 million tonnes of CO₂ annually by 2035. Captured CO₂ is compressed and prepared for permanent geological storage via dedicated onshore infrastructure and subsea reservoirs, reinforcing Qatar’s position at the forefront of large-scale industrial carbon management and lowering the carbon intensity of its LNG exports.
