Southern Ute Indian Tribe / Kinder Morgan
Red Cedar Carbon Capture Project
Kinder Morgan entered into a deal with the Red Cedar Gathering Company—a joint venture between the Southern Ute Indian Tribe Growth Fund (51%) and Kinder Morgan (49%)—to provide carbon dioxide (CO₂) transportation and permanent sequestration services. Under the agreement, CO₂ captured from two natural gas treating facilities in southern Colorado (up to 400,000 metric tons annually) will be transported via Kinder Morgan’s existing Cortez pipeline and permanently stored in a Class II well in the Permian Basin. Red Cedar Gathering Company captures compresses and transports CO2 in LaPlata County, Colorado. The CO2 pipeline is approximately 20-miles long with a normal operating pressure of 1400 – 1550 psig and an MAOP of 3,000 psig. The Red Sage Carbon Capture Facility is designed to capture the CO2 from the central treating plants. The CO2 is compressed and delivered into the CO2 pipeline and transported to Coyote Gulch where the custody transfer occurs and then is delivered into Kinder Morgan’s Cortez Pipeline. The CO2 pipeline is designed to transport ~300,000 mtpy of CO2 for sequestration in West Texas.
