Riberalta Biochar

Exomad Green’s Riberalta biochar facility, located in Bolivia’s Amazon region, is an industrial-scale biochar carbon removal project that converts sustainably sourced forestry residues into stable carbon-rich biochar via advanced pyrolysis technology, enabling long-term atmospheric CO₂ removal while supporting local land restoration and agricultural productivity. Originally commissioned in 2024 with approximately 60,000 tCO₂/year removal capacity, the facility underwent a major expansion completed in late 2025 that increased pyrolysis lines from three to six, doubling annual capture capacity to roughly 120,000 tCO₂ and raising biochar production to about 50,000 tonnes per year. The project generates durable carbon removal credits verified through digital MRV systems and standards such as Puro.earth, with biochar primarily applied to soils to enhance fertility and carbon permanence. Feedstock consists mainly of hardwood forestry residues that would otherwise be burned or decomposed, improving waste management while creating local economic and environmental co-benefits.
