Rookery South ERF CCS
The Rookery South Carbon Capture Project is a planned carbon capture facility to be built alongside the existing Rookery South Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Stewartby, Bedfordshire, England. The project is being developed by Rookery South Limited, a joint endeavour between Encyclis and Veolia, to capture CO₂ from the flue gas of the waste-to-energy plant and prevent it from being released into the atmosphere. The capture system will cool and treat the ERF’s flue gas using an amine solvent process to separate and recover CO₂, with the aim of capturing around 570,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, representing up to 95 percent of emissions from normal ERF operation. Captured CO₂ is planned to be compressed and transported into the national carbon capture and storage core network pipeline proposed by the UK’s National Infrastructure Commission for onward transport to permanent geological storage. The project has secured planning permission from Central Bedfordshire Council as of late 2025 and is advancing detailed design and consultation, with a formal planning application targeted for submission in early 2025 and construction expected to take approximately four years once approvals and transport arrangements are in place.
