Renova
Sävenäs WtE Carbon Capture Project
Renova Miljö AB is developing carbon capture at its Sävenäs waste-to-energy plant in Gothenburg, Sweden — a 550,000-tonne-per-year facility in operation since 1972 that supplies 5% of the city's electricity and one-third of its district heating energy. The plant emitted 546,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2025, of which 294,000 tonnes were biogenic. The Sävenäs CCS project plans a step-wise installation, capturing CO2 from one furnace line initially with future scale-up, using amine-based capture technology at an initial capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum. Captured CO2 would be transported to a CO2 hub or directly to geological storage, with regional CO2 infrastructure expected to mature beyond 2030. In 2026, Renova won support in the Swedish Energy Agency's second bio-CCS reverse auction, securing a share of SEK 9.3 billion awarded jointly with SYSAV and Öresundskraft for 5.75 million tonnes of biogenic CO2. Renova committed to capture and permanently store 890,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 over the support period, with geological storage to commence within four years of the funding decision. The project underpins Renova's ambition to become climate-neutral and contributes to Gothenburg's near-zero climate footprint target for 2030 and Sweden's net-zero 2045 goal; its financial model incorporates EU ETS pricing, carbon removal credits, and public funding.
