Shougang Jingtang Blast Furnace Gas Carbon Capture Trial Facility

Shougang Group and Rio Tinto have built and commissioned an industrial-scale carbon capture trial facility at Shougang's Jingtang base that captures CO2 from blast furnace gas produced during ironmaking. It can handle up to 3,000 m³/h of blast furnace gas and capture up to 10,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. It's part of a 2022 MOU between the two companies covering steel decarbonization R&D, and follows a smaller blast furnace capture unit commissioned in 2024. The unit is tied into Shougang's ironmaking system and will run long-term for trials and research. The partners are looking at converting the captured CO2 into syngas that can go back into the steelmaking process, and at using waste heat from existing operations to bring capture costs down
